What Is UV DTF? Uses, Durability and How It Works
UV DTF is a peel-and-stick transfer for hard surfaces like glass, tumblers and metal. Here is how it is made, what it sticks to, how to care for it and what it...
Short answer: UV DTF is a peel-and-stick transfer printed with UV-cured ink on clear film, made for hard surfaces like glass, tumblers, metal and plastic. You rub it onto the item, peel off the top film and you're done, with no heat press. A single 3″ UV DTF sticker costs $3.00 at BeeDTF, and a 22″ × 10″ UV gang sheet costs $12.
Regular DTF transfers are pressed onto fabric with heat. Our UV DTF transfers cover the things a heat press can't reach: cups, pens, phone cases, signs and packaging. This guide explains how UV DTF is made, what it sticks to, how long it lasts and what it costs in our San Jose shop.

How does UV DTF work?
UV DTF works by printing ink that cures instantly under UV light onto an adhesive film, then sealing it under a clear transfer film so the whole design moves to your item in one piece.
Here is the process in general terms, in the order it happens on the printer:
- Film A (adhesive film). The print goes onto a film that carries the glue layer. This is the side that will touch your cup or tumbler.
- White base. A layer of white ink goes down under the colors. It keeps the design bright on clear glass and dark surfaces.
- Color. Full-color UV ink is printed. A UV lamp cures it as it prints, so it is hard and dry within seconds.
- Varnish. A clear gloss layer goes on top. This is what gives UV DTF its slightly raised feel and shine, and it adds scratch resistance.
- Film B (transfer film). A clear film is laminated over the print. It holds every part of the design together, including small letters and loose pieces.
When your order arrives, you get the design sandwiched between a backing (film A) and the clear top (film B). You peel off the backing, stick the design down, rub it, and peel off the top film. Only the printed layers stay behind. Areas with no ink carry no glue, so there is no clear sticker edge around the art.
What surfaces does UV DTF stick to?
UV DTF sticks to smooth, hard, clean surfaces that don't bend much. The smoother the surface, the better the grip.
| Surface | How it does | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Glass | Very well | Cups, glass cans, jars, mirrors. Clean with rubbing alcohol first. |
| Stainless tumblers | Very well | Smooth or lightly coated finishes work best. |
| Metal | Well | Water bottles, tins, laptop lids, tool cases. |
| Hard plastic | Well | Phone cases, storage bins, pens, helmets. |
| Sealed wood | Well | Sealed or painted wood only. Raw wood is too porous. |
| Packaging | Well | Boxes, jars and bottle labels with a smooth face. |
| Ceramic | Well on glazed | Glazed mugs and tiles. Not unglazed bisque. |
A quick test before a big job: stick one small piece on the item, wait a day, then try to lift the edge with a fingernail. If it holds, the rest will too.
What won't UV DTF stick to?
UV DTF won't hold on fabric, on surfaces that stretch or flex a lot, or on rough and porous textures where the glue can't make full contact.
- Fabric and clothing. UV DTF is not made for the wash. Shirts and hoodies need regular DTF pressed with heat.
- Silicone and soft rubber. Silicone phone cases and soft grips repel most adhesives.
- Raw wood, concrete, unglazed clay. They soak up or crumble under the glue.
- Heavy texture. Rough powder coat and sandy finishes leave air gaps, so edges lift.
- Greasy or damp surfaces. Any oil or moisture under the film weakens the bond.
If you're deciding between the two print types for a project, our comparison of DTF and UV DTF lays out which one fits which item.
How do you apply UV DTF?
You apply UV DTF by hand in about a minute: clean, peel, place, rub, peel again. No heat and no special tools are needed.
- Clean the surface with rubbing alcohol and let it dry completely.
- Peel the backing slowly. The design should stay on the clear top film.
- Place it. On a curved item, put the center down first.
- Rub firmly from the center outward with a squeegee or plastic card. Go over every edge.
- Peel the top film slowly at a low angle, folded back close to the surface.
- If any part lifts with the film, lay it back down and rub again before you keep peeling.
Most problems we hear about come from step 4. Light rubbing leaves tiny air spots that show as silvery patches and lift later. Press harder than feels necessary, especially on edges and thin lines.
How long does UV DTF last, and how do you care for it?
UV DTF is waterproof and scratch-resistant in normal use, and it lasts a long time on items that are hand washed and handled with care.
Give it 24 hours after applying before you wash the item or use it hard. The adhesive keeps bonding during that time. After that:
- Hand wash only. Warm water, mild soap, a soft sponge or cloth.
- No dishwasher. We don't recommend it. Heat, strong detergent and long spray cycles wear the edges.
- No long soaks. Don't leave cups sitting in a full sink overnight.
- No abrasive sponges. Scrub pads and steel wool scratch the varnish and catch edges.
- No microwave. Metal tumblers shouldn't go in anyway, and the print isn't made for it.
Most wear starts at an edge. If a corner ever starts to lift, press it back down firmly right away while it's still clean.
How much does UV DTF cost?
UV DTF costs $1.75 for a single 1.5″ sticker and $24.50 for a 21″ sticker at BeeDTF, and a UV gang sheet starts at $12 for 22″ × 10″.
| Product | Size | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Single sticker | 2″ | $2.25 |
| Single sticker | 3″ | $3.00 |
| Single sticker | 4″ | $3.75 |
| Single sticker | 6″ | $5.25 |
| Single sticker | 10″ | $9.00 |
| Single sticker | 12″ | $11.75 |
| UV gang sheet | 22″ × 10″ | $12 |
| UV gang sheet | 22″ × 20″ | $23 |
| UV gang sheet | 22″ × 50″ | $53 |
| UV gang sheet | 22″ × 100″ | $100 |
Single stickers come on a roll; pre-cut adds $0.25 each. Here is why gang sheets are the cheaper choice for many small pieces. With ¼″ gaps, a 22″ × 10″ sheet fits about 18 designs at 3″ (six across, three rows). That's $12 for 18, or about $0.67 each, compared with $3.00 each as single stickers. At 2″, the same sheet holds about 36, roughly $0.33 each.
Every size and option is listed on the UV DTF stickers product page.
Should you order UV DTF stickers, a gang sheet or a ready-sized wrap?
Order single stickers for one or a few square designs, a gang sheet for many designs or odd shapes, and a ready-sized wrap if you're decorating a standard glass can or 40 oz tumbler.
| Option | Best for | Sizes and price |
|---|---|---|
| UV DTF stickers | A few logos or labels | Square, 1.5″ ($1.75) to 21″ ($24.50) |
| UV gang sheet | Many designs, mixed sizes, long thin shapes like pen wraps | 22″ wide, from 22″ × 10″ ($12) to 22″ × 200″ ($189) |
| 16 oz glass can wrap | Standard 16 oz glass cans | 9.33″ × 4.5″, $3.00 |
| 20 oz glass can wrap | Standard 20 oz glass cans | 8.33″ × 5″, $3.50 |
| 40 oz tumbler wrap | 40 oz tumblers | 11″ × 8″, $6.50 |
You can design the sheet right in your browser with the UV DTF gang sheet builder, or upload a finished 22″ wide file if you already laid it out. A real person checks every file before it prints, and we email you if something looks off.
What file do you need for UV DTF?
UV DTF needs the same kind of file as regular DTF: a transparent PNG at 300 DPI at the size you want it printed, in RGB.
Keep lines at least 1 pt and text at least 6 pt. Very thin details are harder to transfer cleanly, and small loose pieces such as dots over an "i" need firm rubbing to come off the top film. Anything that isn't transparent will print, including a white background box. The full checklist is on our file guidelines page.

Frequently asked questions about UV DTF
Do you need a heat press for UV DTF?
No. UV DTF is applied by hand with pressure. You rub it on with a squeegee or plastic card and peel off the top film.
Is UV DTF waterproof?
Yes, in normal use. It handles hand washing and wet hands. It isn't made for the dishwasher, long soaks or scrubbing with abrasive pads.
Can UV DTF go on shirts?
No. UV DTF is for hard surfaces and won't survive a washing machine. For clothing, use regular DTF pressed with heat.
Does UV DTF leave a clear sticker edge?
No. Glue sits only under the printed areas, so after you peel the top film, only the design stays on the item.
Can you reposition UV DTF after it touches the surface?
Not really. The adhesive grabs on contact. Place the center first and lower the rest carefully, or use tape as a hinge to line it up before the backing comes off.
How fast do UV DTF orders ship?
Orders placed by 2 PM PT Monday to Friday, or 12 PM PT on Saturday, ship the same day. Shipping is $5.99 and free on orders of $50 or more.
