Short answer: UV DTF sticks very well to clean, smooth glass. Wipe the glass with rubbing alcohol, apply the design to the outside surface, rub it down firmly, and wait 24 hours before the first hand wash. A 3″ UV DTF sticker for a glass cup or jar costs $3.00 at BeeDTF.

Glass is one of the easiest surfaces for UV DTF because it's hard, smooth and non-porous. No heat is involved, unlike DTF transfers for fabric. For the basics of how the print is built, see what UV DTF is and how it works.

UV DTF on glass at a glance

  • Prep: soap and water, dry, then rubbing alcohol. Glass at room temperature.
  • Which side: the outside. The design is made to be seen from the top.
  • Clear glass: best results. The white base keeps colors solid.
  • Frosted glass: smooth etched frost usually works; rough frost needs a test first.
  • Care: hand wash only, no dishwasher, no long soaks, no scrub pads.
  • Wait time: 24 hours before washing or heavy use.

Does UV DTF work on glass?

Yes. Glass is one of the best surfaces for UV DTF because the adhesive gets full contact on a smooth, non-porous face.

Customers put our UV DTF transfers on drinking glasses, glass cans, mason jars, candle jars, spice jars, vases, picture frame glass and mirrors. The print has a white base under the colors, so the design stays bright and solid on clear glass instead of looking see-through.

How do you prep glass for UV DTF?

Wash the glass, dry it fully, then wipe the print area with rubbing alcohol and let it evaporate.

  1. Remove any labels and glue residue. Sticky spots stop the print from bonding.
  2. Wash with dish soap and warm water to remove grease, and dry with a lint-free cloth.
  3. Wipe the print area with rubbing alcohol. Don't touch it with your fingers afterward.
  4. Let the glass reach room temperature. Glass straight from a cold car or the fridge collects condensation you can't see.

Skip household glass cleaners for prep. Some leave a thin film that's made to repel smudges, and it repels adhesive too.

Does UV DTF work on frosted glass as well as clear glass?

UV DTF works best on clear, smooth glass. On frosted glass it depends on the texture of the frost.

Glass type Result Tip
Clear glass Best Standard prep and firm rubbing.
Smooth etched frost Usually good Rub harder and longer, especially edges.
Rough or sandblasted frost Test first Tiny pits leave air gaps; edges may lift.
Spray-on frost coating Test first The print bonds to the coating, not the glass.
Colored or tinted glass Good The white base keeps colors accurate.

Run your fingernail over frosted glass. If it feels like fine paper, it's smooth enough. If it feels gritty, try one small piece and check it after 24 hours before doing a batch.

Should UV DTF go on the inside or outside of glass?

UV DTF goes on the outside of the glass. The print is built to be seen from its top side, with the colors in front of the white base.

If you stick it to the inside of a clear glass, people looking through the glass see the back of the print, which is the white base, not your design. On a drinking glass, the inside also touches liquid and gets scrubbed more. For mirrors, apply the design to the front face, the side you look at, never to the coated back.

Where should UV DTF go on cups, jars and mirrors?

Put UV DTF on the flattest, straightest part of the item, away from the drinking rim and from spots that get scrubbed or gripped hard.

Item Best placement Avoid
Drinking glasses and glass cans Straight middle of the body The rim where lips touch, the curved base
Mason and storage jars Flat panel or straight wall Raised lettering, shoulders and threads
Candle jars Lower half of the jar Near the top, where the flame heats the glass
Mirrors Corners or edges of the face Spots cleaned daily, behind steam-heavy areas for the first 24 h
Vases and bottles Straight sides Tight necks and strong curves

For full wraps on 16 oz and 20 oz glass cans, our ready-sized wraps take out the guesswork. Sizes and measuring tips are in our guide to UV DTF transfers for tumblers.

How do you apply UV DTF to glass?

Peel the backing, place the design, rub it firmly from the center out, then peel the clear film slowly at a low angle.

  1. Peel the backing slowly so the design stays on the clear top film.
  2. On a curved glass, set the center down first. On a flat mirror, start at one edge.
  3. Rub from the center outward with a squeegee or plastic card, then go over every edge.
  4. Peel the clear film slowly, folded back close to the glass.
  5. If any part lifts, lay it back down, rub again and keep peeling.

On clear glass you can check your work from the inside: any spot that looks silvery or cloudy through the glass hasn't bonded yet. Rub that spot again before peeling. The full walkthrough is in how to apply UV DTF stickers without bubbles.

How do you wash glass with UV DTF on it?

Hand wash it in warm, soapy water with a soft sponge, and wait 24 hours after applying before the first wash.

  • No dishwasher. We don't recommend it for UV DTF.
  • No long soaks in the sink.
  • No scrub pads or steel wool on the design.
  • Mirrors: spray cleaner on the cloth, not on the design, and wipe gently.

Our post on whether UV DTF stickers are dishwasher safe explains why we stick to hand washing.

Why is UV DTF bubbling or lifting on glass?

Bubbles and lifting on glass almost always come from a dirty surface, cold glass, or too little rubbing before the film was peeled.

Problem Likely cause Fix
Small bubbles Air trapped while placing Push them to the nearest edge with a card. Rub from the center out next time.
Silvery patches Adhesive not fully in contact Rub harder before peeling the film; check from inside the glass.
Edges lifting the next day Oil, residue or condensation Press back down. On the next one, clean with alcohol and use room-temperature glass.
Design stays on the film Not rubbed enough, or peeled too fast Lay the film back, rub again, peel slower at a lower angle.
Lifting after washing Washed too soon, soaked or scrubbed Wait 24 hours, hand wash only, soft sponge.

Frequently asked questions about UV DTF on glass

Is UV DTF on glass waterproof?

Yes, in normal use. It handles hand washing and wet hands. We don't recommend the dishwasher or long soaks.

Can I put UV DTF on the inside of a glass?

We don't recommend it. The print is made to be seen from the top side, so from outside you would see the white base, not the design.

Does UV DTF stick to frosted glass?

Smooth etched frost usually works with extra rubbing. Rough or sandblasted frost and spray-on coatings should be tested with one small piece first.

Can UV DTF go on a mirror?

Yes. Apply it to the front face of the mirror, keep cleaners off the design, and wait 24 hours before a steamy shower.

Can UV DTF go on a candle jar?

Yes, on the lower part of the jar. Keep it away from the top, where the glass gets hottest.

Do I need heat to apply UV DTF to glass?

No. UV DTF is applied by hand with firm pressure. No heat press or oven is used.
