Short answer: To place a DTF transfer, fold the shirt in half to find the center, then measure down from the collar seam: 3″–4″ for an adult front, 2.5″–3″ for youth, 2″ for toddlers and 4″–5″ for a full back. Line the center of the design up with the fold, check it on a hanger, then press.

This guide is about how to measure and line up a print. For the size of each print, use our DTF transfer size chart. For pressing, see the DTF heat press settings guide. BeeDTF prints DTF transfers in San Jose, California.

DTF placement at a glance

  • Measure from: the collar seam, not the top of the collar.
  • Adult front: 3–4″ below the collar seam.
  • Youth front: 2.5–3″. Toddler: 2″.
  • Full back: 4–5″ below the back collar.
  • Left chest: top 7–9″ below the shoulder seam, 3–4″ from center.
  • Hoodie front: end the print above the pocket.
  • Final check: hang the shirt and look from a few steps back.

How do you measure DTF transfer placement?

You measure DTF placement in three steps: fold to find the center, measure down from the collar seam, then check the shirt on a hanger. It takes under a minute per shirt.

DTF placement in 3 steps: fold to find the center, measure 3 to 4 inches below the front collar and 4 to 5 inches below the back collar, then hang and check
Fold, measure, check.
  1. Fold: fold the shirt in half lengthwise and pre-press 2–3 seconds to make a light center crease.
  2. Measure: lay a ruler from the collar seam down to where the top of the design will sit.
  3. Line up: match the center of the transfer to the crease. Tape the corners if the fabric is slippery.
  4. Check: before pressing, hold the shirt up or put it on a hanger. A print that looks right flat can look low when worn.

Where does a front print go?

A front print goes 3″–4″ below the collar seam on adult shirts, centered on the fold. That is about four fingers' width. Taller designs start nearer 3″ so they don't run toward the belly.

Shirt Distance below collar seam Print width
Adult S–XL 3–4″ 10–12″
Adult 2XL+ 3.5–4.5″ 12–13″
Women's fitted 2.5–3″ 9–10″
Youth 2.5–3″ 8–10″
Toddler 2″ 5–7″
V-neck 2″ below the point of the V 10–11″

How does placement change for hoodies, kids and women's shirts?

Hoodie prints end above the pouch pocket, women's and kids' prints sit higher and smaller, and V-necks are measured from the bottom of the V.

  • Pullover hoodie: 3″ below the neckline, max about 11″ tall so it ends above the pocket.
  • Zip hoodie: skip the front center; use left chest or back.
  • Women's fitted tee: 2.5″–3″ below the collar and 9″–10″ wide.
  • Kids: 2″–3″ below the collar; see the size chart for widths.
  • Back prints: see back-of-shirt DTF placement.
  • Left chest: see left chest logo size and placement.

What tools make placement faster?

A ruler, a T-square placement guide and heat-resistant tape make placement faster and repeatable. For batches, a mark on the press platen saves measuring every shirt.

Tool What it does Cost
Clear ruler Measures from the collar seam A few dollars
T-shirt alignment ruler (T-square) Centers and squares the print in one step About $10–$25
Heat-resistant tape Holds the transfer on slippery fabrics A few dollars
Platen marks or a laser guide Repeats the same spot on every shirt Varies

What placement mistakes should you avoid?

The most common placement mistakes are measuring from the top of the collar, placing prints too low and using one adult size on kids' shirts.

Mistake Result Fix
Measuring from the top of the collar Print sits about 1″ too high Measure from the seam
Too low (5″+ on adults) Print looks like it's on the belly 3–4″ for adults
Not centered Crooked when worn Fold crease + ruler
Same size on youth and adult Print wraps into the armpits on kids Order two sizes
Pressing over a seam Print gaps at the seam Pressing pillow or move the print

About 3″ below the neckline, ending above the pouch pocket, so no more than about 11″ tall.
