Short answer: for most adult t-shirts, a full-front DTF transfer should be about 11″ wide, a left-chest logo 3.5″–4″ wide, and a full-back print 12″–14″ wide. Youth shirts take 8″–9″, toddler shirts about 6″, and hat fronts about 4.5″ × 2.25″. The full chart below covers every common placement, with tips on where to press each one.

We print DTF transfers every day at BeeDTF, and the question we get most is not about colors or files. It's "How big should my design be?" A design that looks perfect on screen can end up too small on a 2XL hoodie or swallow a toddler tee. This guide gives you the exact sizes our team uses, so your shirts look like they came from a pro shop.

Quick cheat sheet (adult shirts)

  • Full front: 10″–12″ wide (11″ is the safe default)
  • Left chest: 3.5″–4″ wide
  • Full back: 12″–14″ wide
  • Upper back / below collar: 10″–12″ wide × 2″–4″ tall
  • Sleeve: 2.5″–3.5″ wide
  • Back of neck: 2.5″–3″ wide

The complete DTF transfer size chart

Widths are the most important number, because the width is what makes a print look "right" across the chest. Height usually follows your design's shape. Keep the height inside the "max" column so the print doesn't run into the belly or the hem.

Placement Recommended width Max size (W × H) Where to place it
Adult full front 10″–12″ 12″ × 14″ 3″–4″ below the collar
Left chest logo 3.5″–4″ 4.5″ × 4.5″ 7″–9″ below the shoulder seam, 3″–4″ left of center
Adult full back 12″–14″ 14″ × 16″ 4″–5″ below the back collar
Upper back (yoke) 10″–12″ 12″ × 4″ 2″–3″ below the back collar
Back of neck 2.5″–3″ 3.5″ × 2″ 1″ below the back collar
Short sleeve 2.5″–3.5″ 3.5″ × 3.5″ Centered, 2″–3″ below the shoulder seam
Long sleeve (down the arm) 2.5″–3″ 3″ × 14″ Start 2″ below the shoulder seam
Pocket 2.5″–3″ 3.5″ × 3.5″ Centered on the pocket
Hoodie front 10″–12″ 12″ × 11″ Above the pouch pocket, 3″ below the neckline
Hat / cap front 4″–4.5″ 4.5″ × 2.5″ Centered, about 0.5″ above the brim
Tote bag 8″–10″ 10″ × 12″ Centered, 3″ below the top seam
Youth front (S–XL) 8″–10″ 10″ × 11″ 2.5″–3″ below the collar

Adult shirt sizes: does one transfer size fit everyone?

For most orders, yes. An 11″ wide front print looks good on adult S through XL, and that's why most shops (including us) use it as the default. The exceptions are the ends of the size range:

Shirt size Full front width Full back width Left chest width
Adult XS–S 9.5″–10″ 11″–12″ 3.5″
Adult M–L 11″ 12″–13″ 3.5″–4″
Adult XL 11″–12″ 13″–14″ 4″
Adult 2XL–5XL 12″–13″ 14″ 4″–4.5″

Pro tip for mixed-size orders: if you're printing for a team or a school with sizes from Youth S to 3XL, order two sizes of the same design, for example 9″ for youth and small adults and 11.5″ for everyone else. It costs a few cents more per shirt and every shirt looks proportional.

Kids, toddler and baby sizes

Kids' shirts are narrower than they look. A 10″ print that fits a Youth XL will wrap into the armpits of a Youth S. Use this as your guide:

  • Youth S–M (6–10 years): 7.5″–8.5″ wide on the front.
  • Youth L–XL (12–16 years): 9″–10″ wide.
  • Toddler 2T–5T: 5″–7″ wide, 2″ below the collar.
  • Infant onesies and bibs: 3.5″–5″ wide, centered.

Hoodies, hats, sleeves and totes

Hoodies and sweatshirts

The front of a hoodie has less room than a tee because of the pouch pocket. Keep the front print 10″–12″ wide and no taller than about 11″ so it ends above the pocket. Crewneck sweatshirts work like t-shirts: 11″–12″ wide, 3″–4″ below the collar. On the back, 12″–14″ wide is standard.

Hats and caps

Most structured caps fit a print around 4.5″ wide × 2.25″ tall. Low-profile dad hats are smaller, so stay near 4″ × 2″. Wide, short logos work best here, because the front panel curves.

Sleeves and back of neck

Short-sleeve prints are usually 3″ wide. For a long-sleeve "down the arm" print, go 2.5″–3″ wide and up to 14″ long. A small back-of-neck logo or text should be 2.5″–3″ wide.

Tote bags

A standard 15″ × 16″ tote takes a print up to 10″ × 12″. Leave about 3″ under the top seam so the handles don't cover the design.

How to measure placement (without guessing)

  1. Full front: lay the shirt flat. Place the top of the transfer 3″–4″ below the collar seam, about four fingers' width. Fold the shirt in half lengthwise and press lightly to make a center crease, then line up the middle of your design with it.
  2. Left chest: the center of the logo should be roughly in line with the armpit, 3″–4″ left of the center crease (left as worn).
  3. Full back: start 4″–5″ below the back collar. If you're adding a neck logo, leave at least 1″ between the two prints.
  4. Check before you press. Pull the shirt on a hanger or a mannequin and look from a few steps back. A print that looks centered flat can look low once worn.

Once placement is right, follow our DTF pressing instructions for time, temperature and peel.

How size affects your price

With DTF, you pay for the area the design covers, not the number of colors. That means a smaller, well-planned size can save real money on a big order. Here's what common sizes cost when you order DTF transfers by size at BeeDTF:

Design size Typical use Area Price each
4″ × 4″ Left chest, hat, pocket 16 in² $1.25
6″ × 6″ Toddler front 36 in² $1.40
9″ × 9″ Youth front 81 in² $3.15
11″ × 11″ Adult full front 121 in² $4.55
12″ × 14″ Full back 168 in² $5.95

Roll (uncut) prices as of October 2026, before bulk discounts. Pre-cut adds $0.25 per transfer. Bulk discounts start at 10 pieces.

Ordering lots of prints? A DTF gang sheet is often cheaper. A 22″ × 24″ sheet costs $12 and fits four 11″ × 11″ front prints side by side, which works out to about $3 per full-front print. You can also fill the gaps with left-chest logos and neck tags for free. Our gang sheet builder lets you drag your designs onto the sheet and see exactly what fits.

5 sizing mistakes we see every week

  1. Sizing by the canvas, not the artwork. If your file is 12″ wide but the design inside is only 8″, the print comes out 8″. Trim empty space before you order. Our by-size tool can trim it for you.
  2. Using one big size for kids and adults. A print that fits a 2XL will look huge on a Youth M. Order two sizes.
  3. Going too tall. A square 12″ × 12″ is fine, but a 12″ × 16″ front print often ends below the belly button. Keep fronts under about 14″ tall.
  4. Tiny text and thin lines. Text smaller than about 0.2″ tall, and lines thinner than about 1 pt, can break up when pressed. Make small text bold.
  5. Low-resolution files. Print size needs pixels. At 300 DPI, an 11″ wide print needs a file about 3,300 pixels wide. See our file guidelines for more.

Once you know the size, check your file has enough pixels for it: our guide to DPI for DTF printing has a pixel chart for every size above.

Frequently asked questions

What size DTF transfer is best for an adult t-shirt?

11″ wide is the safest full-front size for adult S–XL. Use 12″–13″ for 2XL and up, and 3.5″–4″ for a left-chest logo.

What size is a left chest DTF transfer?

3.5″ to 4″ wide. Go up to 4.5″ on 2XL+ shirts, and keep it around 3″ on youth shirts.

How big should a DTF transfer be for a hoodie?

10″–12″ wide on the front, ending above the pouch pocket (about 11″ tall max). Full back prints can be 12″–14″ wide.

What size DTF transfer for a youth or toddler shirt?

Youth shirts take 8″–10″ wide fronts depending on size. Toddler shirts take 5″–7″, and onesies 3.5″–5″.

What's the largest DTF transfer you can print?

Our by-size transfers go up to 22″ on each side. Gang sheets are 22″ wide and can be up to 300″ long, so you can print oversized designs as long as they fit within 22″ wide.

Can I use one transfer size for every shirt size?

For adult S–XL, yes: 11″ works well. For orders that include youth or 3XL+, two sizes will look much better.
