Short answer: A good ugly sweater party needs 4 things: a theme, 5 to 8 contest categories, 2 or 3 games and a prize for each winner. Plan about 3 hours, ask guests to bring one sweater and one dish, and send invitations 3 weeks ahead. Below are themes, categories, games, food, decor, prizes and invitation wording you can copy.

Not everyone owns an ugly sweater, and thrift stores run out in December. We print DTF transfers and finished sweatshirts in San Jose, California, so the last section shows how to make a printed "ugly sweater" for yourself or the whole group.

Ugly sweater party ideas at a glance

  • Length: about 3 hours, with judging at the halfway mark.
  • Contest: 5 to 8 categories, so more guests win something.
  • Games: 2 or 3 short ones; a runway walk-off is the main event.
  • Food: finger food and one cookie decorating table.
  • Invitations: send 3 weeks ahead, remind 1 week ahead.
  • No sweater? A printed knit design on a sweatshirt or tee works.
  • Group sweatshirts: from $33 each with a front print.

What theme should an ugly sweater party have?

The easiest theme is "ugly sweater" alone, but a second theme gives guests something to build around and makes the contest more varied. Pick one and put it on the invitation.

  • Classic tacky: bells, pom-poms, tinsel. Anything goes.
  • Ski lodge: sweaters plus beanies, cocoa and a fake fireplace on the TV.
  • Retro 80s: shoulder pads, neon and big hair with the sweater.
  • Family reunion: each family picks one color or pattern and matches.
  • Office edition: departments compete as teams.
  • Sweater and pajama night: sweater on top, flannel pants below, for a movie night at home.
  • Light it up: every sweater needs at least one battery light.
  • Thrift challenge: everyone gets a spending cap and one week to build a sweater.

What contest categories work for an ugly sweater party?

Use 5 to 8 categories so the prize doesn't always go to the same person. Write them on a scorecard before the party and let guests vote by ballot or sticker.

Category What wins
Ugliest overall The sweater people can't stop looking at
Best DIY Made or upgraded by hand at home
Most 3D Things sewn, glued or pinned on
Best lights Battery lights that still work at the end of the night
Best couple or group match Two or more sweaters that tell one joke
Best kid's sweater Voted by the adults, judged gently
Best pet sweater Photo entries count if the pet stayed home
Best last-minute effort Clearly made in the car on the way over

Count votes during a game, then announce winners about halfway through. Guests who leave early still see the results.

What games can you play at an ugly sweater party?

The best ugly sweater party games are short, need few supplies and put the sweaters in the spotlight. Plan 2 or 3 and keep each under 15 minutes.

  1. Runway walk-off: each guest walks a taped "runway" to music while someone reads a made-up designer name.
  2. Sweater bingo: cards with squares like pom-pom, reindeer, bell, snowflake, light-up and cat. Guests find a match in the room and get a signature.
  3. Sweater relay: two teams pass one huge sweater down the line, each person pulling it on and off.
  4. Guess the cost: thrift-store sweaters only. The closest guess to the real price wins.
  5. Decorate a paper sweater: kids and adults decorate a paper cut-out with stickers and markers in 5 minutes.
  6. Gift swap: set a spending limit and allow each gift to be stolen twice.

What food and drinks fit an ugly sweater party?

Finger food works best at an ugly sweater party, because guests are walking around and nobody wants sauce on a sweater with 40 pom-poms. Ask each guest to bring one dish so the host only covers drinks and the main tray.

  • Cookie decorating table: plain sugar cookies cut as sweaters, with icing and sprinkles. Guests make the ugliest one.
  • Hot cocoa bar: cocoa, marshmallows, crushed candy canes and whipped cream.
  • Sliders and meatballs: easy to eat with one hand.
  • Tree-shaped snack board: cheese, crackers, grapes and rosemary laid in a triangle.
  • Chili or soup in cups: good for a cold night and easy to serve.
  • Signature punch: name it after the host's sweater and offer a version with no alcohol.

Label each dish with a silly name on a folded card. It doubles as decor and helps guests with allergies read what is in each dish.

How do you decorate for an ugly sweater party?

Decorate around two spots: the runway and the photo wall. Everything else can stay as your normal Christmas decor.

  • Runway: a strip of painter's tape or a red table runner on the floor, with string lights on both sides.
  • Photo wall: a knit-pattern backdrop or a wall of thrifted sweaters pinned flat.
  • Judging table: ballots, pens, a box for votes and the prizes on display.
  • Name tags: cut as tiny sweaters, so guests can give their sweater a name.
  • Table runner: an old sweater cut open and laid flat down the food table.

What prizes should ugly sweater contest winners get?

Ugly sweater prizes don't need to cost much. A funny trophy and bragging rights matter more than the price, and a printed winner shirt lasts longer than a gift card.

  • Thrift-store trophy: any odd object, spray-painted gold, passed on to next year's winner.
  • Winner shirt: a tee that says the category and the year, like "Ugliest Sweater 2026".
  • First pick: the winner goes first in the gift swap.
  • Cookie box: the best cookies from the decorating table.
  • Paper crown: the winner wears it for the rest of the night.

What should an ugly sweater party invitation say?

An ugly sweater party invitation should say the date, time, place, dress code and contest in the first few lines. Add what to bring and an RSVP date. Copy one of these and change the details.

  • Casual: "Dig out your worst sweater. Ugly Sweater Party at the Garcias', Saturday, Dec 12, 6 to 9 p.m. Bring a dish to share. Prizes for the ugliest, the brightest and the most last-minute. RSVP by Dec 5."
  • Office: "Our team holiday party is an ugly sweater party this year. Friday, Dec 11, 3 p.m., break room. Departments compete for Best Group Match. Snacks are on us."
  • Family: "Christmas Eve dinner has a dress code: one ugly sweater per person, pets included. Contest after dessert. Grandma is judging, and she can't be bribed."

How do you make a DIY ugly sweater with a print?

You make a DIY printed ugly sweater by designing a fake knit pattern, printing it as a DTF transfer and pressing it on a plain sweatshirt or tee. It looks like a busy knit from across the room, and it is washable.

  1. Design the pattern: pixel-style snowflakes, trees and zigzag bands, with a joke line in the middle if you like.
  2. Export the file: transparent PNG, 300 DPI at print size, RGB. Keep lines at least 1 pt and text at least 6 pt.
  3. Pick the size: 10–12″ wide for an adult front.
  4. Order the print: you can order a single transfer by size, from $1.25 for small prints.
  5. Press it: 275°F, 7 seconds, medium pressure, hot peel, then a 5-second finish press.
  6. Wait to wash: 24 hours before the first wash.

Then add the 3D parts. Pom-poms, bells and tinsel can be pinned or stitched around the print. Don't press over anything glued on.

How do you order matching ugly sweater sweatshirts for a group?

To order matching group sweatshirts, upload one design, pick the blank and the print location, and add the sizes each person needs. We print every shirt and ship them ready to wear.

Item Blank from With a front print
Adult sweatshirt $25 from $33
Adult hoodie $28 from $36
Adult tee $14 from $22
Youth tee $13 from $21
Toddler tee $12 from $20

Print locations are front, left chest, back and sleeve, $8 each. A back print with each person's name adds $8 per shirt. Ten adult sweatshirts with a front print start at $330, and the order ships free because it is over $75. Start in our custom apparel collection.

An ugly sweater design should be 10–12″ wide on an adult sweatshirt front. Kids' prints are smaller so the pattern doesn't run into the sleeves.

Placement Print width
Adult front 10–12″
Youth front 8–10″
Toddler front 5–7″
Left chest name or logo 3–4″

Sweatshirts often go on over another shirt, so check the size chart on the product page before you choose. More placements are in our DTF transfer size chart.

When should you order printed sweaters for the party?

Order printed sweaters at least a week before the party date. For a Christmas Eve or Christmas Day party, the suggested order-by dates are December 10 with standard shipping and December 14 with Express.

  • Same-day shipping: orders by 2 PM PT Monday to Friday, or 12 PM PT on Saturday. We are closed on Sunday.
  • Delivery: usually 1–3 business days after it ships.
  • Shipping cost: $5.99, free on orders of $75 or more (DTF and UV DTF orders ship free from $50). Express ($13) is available for DTF orders.

These dates are suggestions, not a guarantee. Most ugly sweater parties happen in the first three weeks of December, so count back from your own date.

Frequently asked questions about ugly sweater parties

When should you have an ugly sweater party?

Most are held on a Friday or Saturday in the first three weeks of December. Pick a date 3 weeks out so guests have time to find a sweater.

How long should an ugly sweater party last?

About 3 hours. Run judging and the main game around the halfway point.

What if a guest doesn't own an ugly sweater?

Keep a box of spare thrifted sweaters by the door, or let them enter the Best Last-Minute Effort category.

Is a printed sweatshirt allowed in the contest?

That's up to the host. Many parties allow it and add pom-poms or lights for the Most 3D category.

Can I put a DTF print on a knit sweater?

We don't suggest it. A DTF print presses best on a smooth sweatshirt, hoodie or tee; a chunky knit is too uneven.

How many contest categories should there be?

5 to 8 categories for most parties. With fewer than 15 guests, 5 is plenty.

No ugly sweater? Print one.
