Short answer: Hot peel DTF film is peeled right after the press opens; cold peel film is peeled only after it cools completely. The film's coating decides which one you have. Hot peel is faster and gives a matte finish after the finish press; cold peel is slower and often glossier. BeeDTF transfers are hot peel.

Peeling at the right moment is the step most people get wrong. This guide explains both types and how to tell them apart. For full settings, see our DTF heat press settings guide and the pressing instructions. BeeDTF prints DTF transfers in San Jose, California.

Hot peel vs cold peel at a glance

  • Hot peel: peel right after the press opens.
  • Cold peel: peel after the film cools fully.
  • What decides it: the release coating on the PET film.
  • Speed: hot peel is faster for batches.
  • Finish: hot peel + finish press = matte; cold peel often glossy.
  • BeeDTF transfers: hot peel.
  • Unsure? Test one corner before pulling.

What is the difference between hot peel and cold peel DTF?

The difference is the release coating on the PET film. Hot peel film releases the print while the adhesive is still warm; cold peel film holds the print until everything has cooled and set. The ink, powder and press settings can be the same.

Is hot peel or cold peel better?

Hot peel is better for speed and for a soft, matte finish; cold peel is more forgiving for beginners because nothing lifts if you wait. For production, most shops prefer hot peel.

Hot peel Cold peel
Peel time Right away After it fully cools
Shirts per hour Higher Lower
Finish Matte after finish press Often glossy
Beginner-friendly Needs a smooth, steady peel Very forgiving
Best for Batches, soft hand Detailed prints, beginners

How do you tell if a transfer is hot or cold peel?

The supplier or the package label tells you if a transfer is hot or cold peel. If you are not sure, wait about 10 seconds after pressing and test one corner: if it releases cleanly, peel; if it pulls the print, let it cool fully.

  • Check the label, the order page or the pressing instructions.
  • Ask the supplier. BeeDTF transfers are always hot peel.
  • Test a corner: clean release = continue; ink lifting = lay it back down and wait.

How do you hot peel a DTF transfer correctly?

You hot peel a DTF transfer by opening the press and peeling right away, in one smooth motion from a corner, keeping the film low and close to the garment.

  1. Press at 275°F for 7 seconds with medium pressure.
  2. Open the press and start peeling within a few seconds.
  3. Pull from a corner, low and parallel to the shirt, in one steady motion.
  4. If an edge lifts, lay the film back down, press 2–3 seconds more and peel again.
  5. Finish press 5 seconds under parchment or Teflon.

What happens if you peel at the wrong time?

Peeling cold peel film too early can pull the print off with the film. Peeling hot peel film too late usually still works, but the release is harder and can leave a slightly rough edge.

Situation What you see Fix
Cold peel film peeled hot Ink lifts with the film Lay it down, re-press 3–5 s, let it cool, peel
Hot peel film peeled cold Stiff release, rough edges Re-warm 2–3 s and peel
Peeled too fast or high Edges lift or stretch Peel low, slow and steady
Skipped finish press Glossy, edges lift after washing Always finish press 5 s
