Free Printable DTF Shirt Care Instructions Card for Your Customers
A free 4×6 printable DTF care card with space for your logo, plus what a care card should say, how to print it and how to include it with every order.
Short answer: A DTF shirt care card tells your customer five things: wait 24 hours before the first wash, wash cold and inside out, use mild detergent with no bleach or softener, hang dry or tumble dry low, and never iron the print. Download our free printable card below (4×6 inches, with space for your logo), print it on card stock and drop one in every order.
Most DTF prints that fail early are washed too soon, dried too hot or ironed by someone who didn't know better. A care card costs a few cents and prevents most of those returns. We made one for our customers who sell shirts, and you are welcome to use it. For the reasons behind each rule, see our guide to how long DTF transfers last. If you need the prints themselves, BeeDTF makes DTF transfers ready to press.

What should a DTF shirt care card say?
A good care card says what to do in as few words as possible, in the order the customer needs it. People read a care card once, when they unpack the shirt, so the first line should be the one that matters on day one: wait 24 hours.
| Line on the card | Why it is there |
|---|---|
| Wait 24 hours before the first wash | The adhesive is still setting; early washing is the top cause of lifting |
| Turn inside out | Protects the print from friction |
| Wash cold, max 85°F / 30°C, gentle cycle | Heat and agitation wear the print |
| Mild detergent only, no bleach or stain remover | Harsh chemicals break down pigment and adhesive |
| No fabric softener or dryer sheets | They coat the print and weaken the bond |
| Hang dry or tumble dry low | High dryer heat is the most common cause of cracks |
| Do not iron the print | A hot iron softens the ink and can stick to it |
| Do not dry clean | Solvents can attack the adhesive |
Notice what is not on the card: brand names, chemistry or exceptions. If a customer has a special case, they will ask you.
How do you print the care card?
Print the PDF at 100% (actual size) on 4×6 photo paper or on letter-size card stock, then trim. Matte card stock around 80–110 lb cover weight feels solid and takes pen or stamp ink if you want to add a handwritten thank-you.
| Option | Paper | Cards per sheet | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home inkjet, 4×6 paper | 4×6 photo or card stock | 1 | No trimming; set "actual size" |
| Home printer, letter size | Letter card stock, 80–110 lb cover | 2 | Trim with a paper cutter |
| Local print shop | Postcard stock | By the hundred | Cheapest per card for large runs |
| Online printer | 4×6 postcard | By the hundred | Add your logo to the PNG first |
Adding your logo: open the PNG in Canva or any design app, place your logo in the dashed box at the top, then export as PDF at the same size. Or print the card as it is and use a logo sticker.
How do you include care instructions with orders?
Put the card where the customer will see it when they open the package, not under the shirt. The best spots are on top of the folded shirt, tucked into the fold, or attached as a hang tag.
- Mailers: place the card on top, face up, so it is the first thing out of the bag.
- Folded shirts in a box: tuck it under the first fold so it shows when the shirt is lifted.
- Events and team orders: give one card per family or team bag, plus a line in the order email.
- Online stores: repeat the five main rules on the product page and in the shipping confirmation email.
- Wholesale: include a stack of cards so your buyer can hand them out.

How do you write your own care instructions?
If you want to write your own care instructions, keep each line under ten words, start each one with a verb, and list them in the order they happen. Use numbers where you can ("85°F", "24 hours") instead of words like "warm" or "soon".
| Instead of | Write |
|---|---|
| "Wash in cool water" | "Wash cold, max 85°F (30°C)" |
| "Allow the print to cure" | "Wait 24 hours before the first wash" |
| "Avoid high temperatures when drying" | "Hang dry or tumble dry low" |
| "Do not use harsh chemicals" | "No bleach, no stain remover, no softener" |
| "Iron carefully" | "Do not iron the print; iron inside out" |

Should you use a care card, a hang tag or a neck label?
A care card is the easiest place to start. Hang tags look more retail, and neck labels stay with the shirt for its whole life, which makes them the most effective long term.
| Format | Best for | Stays with the shirt? | Effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Care card in the package | Online orders, small runs | No | Lowest |
| Hang tag | Retail, markets, boutiques | Until it is cut off | Medium |
| Printed neck label with care icons | Your own clothing brand | Yes, for every wash | Medium; looks most professional |
| Line in the order email | Every online order | No, but easy to find later | Lowest |
If you are building a clothing brand, our custom DTF neck labels can carry your logo, the size and care icons, pressed inside the shirt with the same DTF process.
